Summary of Client’s Challenge

The Florida Department of Children and Families (FLDCF) knew it had an obligation to deliver skill in recognizing and addressing issues of sexual harassment in the workplace. They wanted compliance training for their employees to be able to identify different types of sexual harassment and how to handle such issues. They also wanted to make sure that the managers of employees knew how to identify issues of sexual harassment, and make the right determination on how to address each issue once they had been made known of the event.

Sexual harassment in the workplace is a serious offense. In Florida, when legislation is passed regarding this type of offensive behavior in the workplace, all state departments and agencies must ensure that the new rules and regulations are adhered to through new training. There are a lot of opportunities for missteps, especially when dealing with material that is so sensitive. On one hand, content should be engaging and compelling. That way it is memorable and supports long-term recollection by learners. But at the same time, it’s critical to maintain appropriate sensitivity at all stages of the process, when developing a realistic intervention. Because trainings like these can trigger difficult feelings for learners already recovering from past trauma.

Two Trainings For Employees To Identify Sexual Harrassment And How To Properly Address It

Change by Design was hired to design and develop these two trainings, which followed this production process.

Created Course Storyboards in Microsoft PowerPoint

After receiving approval for course format and styling, we developed both courses in PowerPoint as storyboards that could be used later to create the interactive versions.

Produced Audio Narration and Video Footage To Support Content

Interactive course development also included a number of additional prerequisite activities, each approved by the client before proceeding to the next task. The first of these prerequisites was developing narration scripts, then hiring professional voice talent to narrate the course.

The second prerequisite was developing video scripts and hiring on-camera actors to perform each scenario which portrayed a sexual harassment activity occurring during the daytime at one large department of employees.

Post-Production and Course Authoring

After production was complete, the videos and audio were edited, finalized, and integrated with text content into Captivate. Everything was tailored to clearly define sexual harassment, describe State of Florida policy, and explain actions that employees should take. The scenario-based examples and non-examples of each defined term were delivered between videos and knowledge checks. Finally, the course was readied for export to deployment in the client’s LMS.
